Alpine Thermal Course Austria (June 18 – June 21, 2026)
Our next course, organized in cooperation Flysport.cz with the Jožka paragliding school, takes us to the Austrian Alps. If you want to improve your skills in finding thermals, centering cores, and planning cross-country flights in alpine terrain, this is the perfect event for you.
Who is this course for?
The course is designed for advanced pilots as well as newcomers after their basic course who are serious about their flying. The only requirement for acceptance is mastering independent take-offs and landings safely, so we don't spend time on the basics and can fully focus on improving your piloting skills.
In the mornings, depending on the conditions, we will cover theory, active piloting, handling non-standard flight regimes (collapses), and rapid descent techniques. In the afternoons, we will fully dedicate ourselves to thermal flying and XC.
Who will look after you?
Jakub Rott – a successful XC pilot, instructor, and active competitor who will guide you both on the ground and, most importantly, as your air-guide over the radio.
David Káčer – an experienced paragliding partner who will assist you at the take-off and handle the logistics for retrieves.
Flying Sites in Our Sights
We will select the specific flying sites a few days before the trip based on the current weather forecast to maximize our flying time. Before departure, we will do an online briefing, weather analysis, and confirm the final location together. The top contenders include:
Wolfgangsee (Zwölferhorn – North Take-off): Beautiful flying over the panorama of the Austrian lake with opportunities for XC flights and closing triangles. From here, you can fly east towards Bad Ischl or west towards Gaisberg near Salzburg.
Accommodation options: Campsite near Wolfgangsee/Mondsee, guesthouse, or "wild" camping in cars/vans.
Werfenweng (Bischling): An absolutely perfect, almost textbook terrain with take-offs facing 3 wind directions. It is thermally extremely active and surrounded by magnificent rocky massifs reaching up to 2,000 meters.
Accommodation options: Guesthouses in the valley, or the common and tolerated camping at the parking lot right under the cable car (ideal for campervans, cars, and occasionally a tent pops up too).
Zell am See (Schmittenhöhe): A great site for distance-flying enthusiasts. It offers amazing ridge-running flights towards Mittersill and back via Kaprun.
Accommodation options: At the Czech hotel Florian, or with a Polish friend who rents out rooms in this area.
In case of poor weather conditions at these sites, we will operatively consider more distant locations or shift the date upon mutual agreement.
